"Be careful what you wish for."

Ever since I was a child, I wanted to appear on TV, even if it was for a few seconds. As I grew older, that wish faded into the background.
That was until I turned 24. It was the last week of July, two weeks after getting my promotion that I made it to the news channels. The headline read "Lover murdered in cold blood."
The hands that held whiskey two weeks back were now smeared with blood.
Mariam and I knew each other even before we learnt to stitch together a sentence.
She was my "samne wali khidki ka chand ka tukra."
We confessed our feelings towards the end of class nine. The first time we were seperated for more than a month was when we left for college. She went to practise medicine and I, to study engineering. Every day I spent without her made me fall for her a little more. I cherished every opportunity I got to meet her during those college days.
Back home, my parents were involved in a land dispute with our neighbours. Things got ugly and they stopped talking with each other. The neighbours left and settled elsewhere. I was only made aware of this when I went home in my final year after securing a job.
Mariam and I decided to tie the knot by the end of 2020. But our families didn't agree. No amount of efforts were enough to make them see ahead of our family feud.
