It's just a thing he cannt explain .He could be thinking for her through most of the day but it doesn't hit him to call or text her. The problem was there, but he donno , may be he just wasn't raised in that way or something, he just knew ,they loved enough to understand each other's character.
Measuring love on basis of conversation is quite exaggerating, more understanding each other is the key. Problem comes when he doesn't want to understand you,which hopefully was not the case.
But things should be sorted out through conversation.
He was just bothered about all those things in him( his behaviour) which could have turned her amazing character into cold hearted person , which would be his biggest mistake in life that he would never ever forget about. But deep down he was assured that it will be fine , everything will happen by the right time that he has framed in his mind, he knew what he was doing. He just wanted her to not loose her craziness and warmth because of his sober character some times. He wanted to be the same person for her forever since they came acrossed...
He knew he will never ever be same guy again without that precious crazy girl for whom he went crazy..never !
It was like a long road of achieving alcoholic love for him(more time , more worthy things get and we understand it's value which engraves on Heart forever) or if things get screwed up it was all about a deep trench of numbness for him.
