Smruti Ranjaniji,

Your poem titled"Something I Look at-52" is a very relevant poem in the backdrop of two issues of major importance dominating the discourses of our society namely privacy issue and the issue related to the freedom of expression, both are hotly debated topics at the present time. The poem begins by stating clearly that we are guaranteed the various types of freedoms as per the constitution of india and the right to various freedoms is enshrined in the constitutional documents of many countries the world over as well. But there is a rider or condition here in terms of us enjoying our freedom that is that we can exercise our freedoms as long as they don't violate our fellow human beings ability to enjoy their freedoms. In fact when we have freedom,we need to carry it out in a judicious fashion altogether,we don't have any right to misuse the freedom that is granted or bestowed upon us by the constitutional frameworks of various countries around the world.Freedom must enable individuals to attain full growth and development in terms of their talents, abilities and potentialities and freedom also implies that we also attach the same importance to others need in relation to themselves enjoying various freedoms they are entitled to.Freedom is the foundation on which a democratic society is built up soundly and firmly. When people have real freedom only, people can make genuine progress in life, when it comes to freedom of expression also the same maxim can be applied. Our attitude towards freedom must be put in the following mould that is that"I absolutely disagree with what you say but I shall defend to my death your right to say it".Freedom is not a one-way traffic rather real freedom carries plenty of duties, responsibilities and obligations. All the freedoms we have are to be counterbalanced with duties, then only we can have real freedom. Freedom also ensures dignity of the individuals. The noble principles of justice and liberty are granted to everyone through real freedom prevailing in a society. Freedom also can be defined as a state of mind wherein the minds must be free of all wills, inconsistencies, ambiguities, incompatibilities, discriminations, taboos, stigmas and inhibitions. Real freedom is also all about respecting the dissenting opinions and constructive criticism of others. Always real freedoms are given to humankind with strings attached and that must be understood very clearly and obviously. If untrammelled, unrestricted and unconstrained freedoms are bequeathed upon humanity that can lead to undesirable tendencies and trends in the course of time which can plunge the society into a state of chaos and turmoils.Although freedom is a relative term and it must not in anyway be used to muzzle, gag and stifle genuine opinions but at the same, it shouldn't be a vehicle to engage in character assassinations. But the information people give in good faith to the government must not be used to monitor or spy on them at any rate that is a violation of the individual freedom of the citizens. Kudos to you for composing such a poem of elaborate and full-fledged nature on the theme of freedom touching upon all areas related to freedom.

Critical appreciation by eminent poetess and literary critic ma'am Nandita Samant

The right to freedom of expression is crucial in a democracy – information and ideas help to inform political debate and are essential to public accountability and transparency in a system but they shouldn't infringe into anybody's freedom. In prevailing situation people who speak against atrocities or government policies are silenced and thus right to freedom of speech has been restricted to drafts as a right and all other rights are intrusive and disruptive to an extent, we are forced to abide by them. A balance between all is very essential and it is for us to see that it happens. A very evocative and wise rendition Mr Smruti Ranjan. My commendations.

SOMETHING I LOOK AT-52
BY-SMRUTI RANJAN MOHANTY

The more free we are, the more
we are to restrain ourselves and see
that our freedom does not infringe upon
the right of others to enjoy the same

Freedom is an atmosphere that gives one the opportunity to become oneself
freedom is a will, an ardent desire
to see others at par

Freedom is the foundation upon which
the superstructure of democracy is built
freedom is that basic right which gives
meaning and substance to all other rights
fundamental to the development of man

freedom is a right, the corresponding duty
of which is to create that environment
where each can live with equal dignity

freedom is a state of mind where
the spirit of tolerance and compromise imbibe where there is no fear, hatred and jealousy, pride and prejudice, sectarian and parochial loyalties and it equips one to make a value-free empirical analysis and
see and interpret a situation as it is

Freedom is not a license to do
anything one likes is always subject
to decency and morality, the law of
the land, social norms and common good
or else our unrestricted freedom will
land us in a state of anarchy
where it will be a war of
each against all
