"Here is the critical appreciation of my poem 'A LOOK AT LIFE-42' by Prof Cijo Joseph Chennelil, eminent poet and internationally acclaimed literary critic in his own words. Thanks and gratitude sir for your wonderful analysis of the poem in beautiful words Dear Smruti Ranjaniji, Your poem titled"A Look At Life-42" is a poem that brings into the forefront the salient features concerning life that we all need to practice in our day to day life. This life is to be a life that must be offered to others in selfless manner and services. We need to live our lives without expecting any reward from any quarters,we need to shed our desires so that we can be kept away from unhappiness all throughout our lives. If we engage in sharing than receiving in our lives, that can do us a world of good,we are subtly unhappy because we are more interested in receiving than giving freely to our fellow human beings. The funny thing about us human beings is that we are unhappy when we come to know about the happiness of our fellow human beings, this is the most selfish attitude of us human beings. We human beings all throughout our lives think about others,in fact we are so obsessed with what others do,as a result of which we often loose our peace of mind,we humans also have this imitation culture wherein we are so much interested in following others footsteps than having self-confidence attitude regarding our own personalities, talents, abilities and potentialities. If we are not happy about the successes of others,we can't be happy at all at any rate,we should have an open mindset to accept others joy and their successes in life, then only life will be a worthwhile thing indeed. To make matters worse,we live all throughout our lives with an attitude of jealous nature which can be very toxic and poisonous to ourselves in the long run.Let us all drive away our self-centred attitude and then come into the realm of love stock, block and barrel and every step of the way to lead a happy and contented life.Kudos to you for composing such a poem of magnificent nature. A LOOK AT LIFE-42
BY-SMRUTI RANJAN MOHANTY

The beauty of life
he knows who lives it for others
the feel of charity he feels who
shares his food with another
and remains hungry as such
the pleasure of giving he relishes
who gives without a condition
expecting nothing in reciprocation

The less you live for yourself
and more for others
the more you live for yourself
your little drops of love, affection
sacrifice and concern go a long way
and fetch you the ocean in return

You are not unhappy as such
you are not happy because you think
others are more happy and that
happiness of others is what disturbs you
makes you unhappy

Most of the life
you live thinking about others
their affluence and achievement
and others are always in your
focus and agenda
you are so obsessed and preoccupied with others, hardly any time left
for your own development
you compare yourself with others and feel sad
and carry that sadness with you
and distribute it among others
and make them sad
you are more concerned with
what you do not have and forget the fact that God has endowed you enough to make you happy and contented
you are not happy as you are
you want to be somebody else

You can not be happy
unless you enjoy others happiness
and fee their pangs of sorrow
you will remain with an agitated mind
and a pair of jealous eyes
till the very end

You live the whole of our life
nurturing jealousy and hatred
which gives you nothing expect
lots of heart burning
pain and mental agony
you are to think and reassess
for still some time is left
still you have it in you
to make a rich harvest and live
the rest of life with lots of common sense

Live life to the full
let love be your only language
and religion, the whole world your family
be with others in their moments
of happiness and sorrow
the whole world will be yours
you will have that satisfaction, peace
and tranquility of mind
till now eluding your grasp
a yogi's dream
which a man committed to
naked self interest
can hardly fathom

"KNOW THE POET AND PEEP INTO HIS POEM ********************************************************* Smruti Ranjan Mohanty and His Poem “ A LOOK AT LIFE-21 ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, By Bipul Ch.Kalita ............................. The Text .............. A LOOK AT LIFE-21 ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Independence is a state of mind A way of life To be internalised and nourished To make one independent Of pride and prejudice Hatred and jealousy Violence and fanaticism Fear and false vanity And all those negative emotions That make one badly respond To whims and irrationality It is beautifully reflected In what you think In what you do How you approach life And look at others With whom you interact With whom you do not It is an atmosphere That offers you the best To be your own self An opportunity to flower and flourish And make your dream a reality It is not a licence To do anything You feel like Is always subject to decency and morality And other's right to enjoy The same with all dignity copyright@smruti ranjan 15.08.2015 If I’m asked to point out a prominent Indian poet whose writes in English touch the serious readers of the globe, I’ll have to choose Smruti Ranjan Mohanty as one of the many that I know, He was born on 1st January/1963 at Bamikhal, Odisha ( India). He is an M.A. in Political Science from Utkal University. Though he serves the Govt. of Udisha as a Finance Officer, he keeps on penning beautiful poems, short stories and critical essays in English and Odisha . His writes often appear in various Indian newspapers and journals. No need to say how his beautiful poems enrich the walls of various esteemed poetic groups The poem that caught my attention while I was going through the writes published on 15th August in the ‘Poetry for Peace’ wall, specially keeping in mind the occasion of the India’s 70th Independence Day celebration was “ A LOOK AT LIFE -21". Instead of writing something on the comment box, I decided to take up the poem for a critical exploration. It is one of the poet’s efforts to look at life too. On the surface level the poet seems to express his views on the concept of independence. He starts the poem with a simple definition, stating that independence is a state of mind and a way of life. He thinks that one has to be free from false pride, prejudice, hatred, jealousy, violence, fanaticism, fear and vanity if he wants to enjoy the real pride of being independent. An independent man must avoid negative emotions that can easily motivate him to respond to whims and irrationality. What he wants from his countrymen on this auspicious occasion is that they should refine their mental setup and purify their minds in order to feel the real pride of independence. The poet thinks that a man’s interactions with others show how far independent his personality is. It is an atmosphere in which anybody can feel free and homely in fulfilling his dreams. But it is not simply a licence to do anything. It refers to a good citizen’s moralities and responsibilities towards the nation and its people. There is no hard word or any difficult image in the poem. The poet’s simple approach to the hardest external question on the concept concerned makes the readers feel and internalize its answer. Everybody except the pretenders knows the answer. The problem lies in their approaches to life. 1.“It is an atmosphere That offers you the best To be your own self.......” 2.“It is not a licence To do anything you feel like Is always subject to decency and morality” The trends that the modern poets seem to have set induce the readers to find out what they do not see or understand in the very easy words and expressions they read repeatedly in the poem. I think the greatness of a poet and his poetic world lies in this riddle. It is my earnest hope that Smruti Ranjan Mahanty will keep on composing great poems for us. Bipul Kalita"

Independence is a state of mind
A way of life
To be internalised and nourished
To make one independent
Of pride and prejudice
Hatred and jealousy
Violence and fanaticism
Fear and false vanity
And all those negative emotions
That make one badly respond
To whims and irrationality
It is beautifully reflected
In what you think
In what you do
How you approach life
And look at others
With whom you interact
With whom you do not
It is an atmosphere
That offers you the best
To be your own self
An opportunity to flower and flourish
And make your dream a reality
It is not a licence
To do anything
You feel like
Is always subject to decency and morality
And other's right to enjoy
The same with all dignity

His writes often appear in various Indian newspapers and journals. No need to say how his beautiful poems enrich the walls of various esteemed poetic groups

The poem that caught my attention while I was going through the writes published on 15th August in the ‘Poetry for Peace’ wall, specially keeping in mind the occasion of the India’s 70th Independence Day celebration was “ A LOOK AT LIFE -21". What are the books that can change people's lives?

#1. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho [Fable]

There are millions of Books but none like this one. This is a masterpiece in FOLLOWING YOUR DREAMS tale. This is the story of a boy who followed his dreams. You can understand everything about the Universe, Dreams, and Life in this one epic adventure. If you want to read one and only one book, then I would recommend this one only.

Two of the most powerful quotes from the book:

There is ONE GREAT TRUTH on this planet:
Whoever you are, or whatever it is that you do, when you want something, it is because that desire originated in the soul of the Universe. It is your mission on earth.

To realize one’s destiny is a person’s only real obligation. All things are one. When you want something; all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.

#2. Think & Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill [Personal Development]

Napoleon Hill interviewed "40 millionaires" to discover the common thought processes and behavior that had led to their success. His study of these "best practices" was revolutionary in a world where it was largely assumed that great wealth resulted from a combination of greed and luck.

Best quote: "All the breaks you need in life wait within your imagination. Imagination is the workshop of your mind, capable of turning mind energy into accomplishment and wealth."

#3. Power of Your Subconscious Mind by Dr. Joseph Murphy [Mind Programming]

Best Quote: “As you sow in your subconscious mind, so shall you reap in your body and environment.”

#4. As A Man Thinketh by James Allen [Personal Development]

It's a classic written in 1902. It explains how your thoughts mold your personality, and how that personality drives you to take action and determines the type of action you'll take.

Best quote: "The dreamers are the saviors of the world. As the visible world is sustained by the invisible, so men, through all their trials and sins and sordid vocations, are nourished by the beautiful visions of their solitary dreamers."

#5. The Secret By Rhonda Byrne [Law of Attraction]

Most people love this book, and some hate it. But this is the book that lights up more life than any other books in Self-help arena by unfolding the secret to the Universe. It holds the treasure to the Universal Law of Attraction. Read this book and it will help you in every area of life while keeping you motivated.

Many people hate this book also because they consider it like a one stop solution. Remember no book can change anyone’s life jut by reading but only with the consistent application, it shows the result. Moreover, read this book and the follow the next two books by Rhonda Byrne The Power & The Magic and together they will give you the real action plan to manifest your dreams. Millions and millions have changed their life with these three books only. So don't buy the negative feedback from anyone ..Read them and try it and see the result.

Best Quote: “Be grateful for what you have now. As you begin to think about all the things in your life you are grateful for, you will be amazed at the never-ending thoughts that come back to you of more things to be grateful for. You have to make a start, and then the law of attraction will receive those grateful thoughts and give you more just like them.”

#6. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey

Our habits build or break our life. This book will help you develop better habits

It also convinces you that acquiring them will make you a better person.

Best quote: "Sow a thought, reap an action; sow an action, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character, reap a destiny."

#7. Awaken the Giant Within by Tony Robbins

This a masterpiece from Tony Robbins, which align emotional state and physical dynamics to bring any kind of transformation in life. Which is now more popularly known as NLP but this book will take you deep inside the process and how to apply in life to achieve a massive result.

Best quote: "If you can't, you must. If you must, you can."

“Live life fully while you're here. Experience everything. Take care of yourself and your friends. Have fun, be crazy, be weird. Go out and screw up! You're going to anyway, so you might as well enjoy the process. Take the opportunity to learn from your mistakes: find the cause of your problem and eliminate it. 1. Philosophy: The Open Society and Its Enemies of Karl R. Popper. Although those are two Volumes (I and II) the topic is the same. In the first Volume Karl Popper makes a brilliant analysis of ancient philosophers (Plato and Aristotle in particular) and how they influenced our culture till those day. In the second Volume Popper focuses on Hegel and Marx and how they influenced modern times ideologies. Although Popper is the only modern philosopher with a scientific approach the open society is a harsh critique to how those philosophers’ interpretation of the world lead eventually to the birth antidemocratic ideologies. Believe me when I say that this is one of the most mind-blowing texts ever written. In addition Popper’s style is very simple and captivating.

how did it change my life? Popper is one of the first philosophers which look at other philosophers with a skeptical eye. Once you read Popper you realize that also Plato and Aristotle were men and as such they made mistakes. Therefore, you don't take anything for given anymore.

2. Neuroscience:  Soft-Wired How the New Science of Neuroplasticity can change your life – Dr. Michael Merzenich PHD. This book is going to open your mind on how our brain actually works. You will see many myths that you believed true throughout your life bust in the pages of “Soft-Wired”. The book is brilliant since it explains the new scientific findings but also how to improve your life through neuroplasticity. It is really a guide on how to live.

how did it change my life? Adter reading Soft-wired my belief system shifted. I no longer believed to be a fixed individual. In other words I realized that DNA plays a dismal role compared to life and experience. And if you are willing to put the effort you can change yourself at any time in life. Empowering!

3. Non-Fiction: The Black Swan – Nassim Nicholas Taleb

Taleb is going to open your eyes on many topics and human biases. If you read this book carefully, eventually you will understand things about yourself and society in general that you did not notice before.

how did it change my life? It made me realize how humans are biased. Join the modern skeptics!

4. Fiction – The Divine Comedy – Dante Alighieri

Absolutely the best work ever written by any account. Dante Alighieri mixes fiction (he travels through hell, purgatory before reaching heaven) with history. Indeed in this fantastic journey he encounters many historical figures. His guide throughout this spiritual journey will be the Latin author Virgil that he defines as great master.

how did it change my life? Reading Dante is like going back in time and meeting many of the greatest ancient authors and mythological characters. It makes you discover a world that you did not have idea existed. Enlightening!

5. Autobiographies: Anwar El Sadat: In Search of Identity an Autobiography.

The amazing, inspiring and heroic personality, Sadat (former Egyptian president eventually assassinated) tells his story that seems more a tale than a real story. Sometimes reality exceeds fiction and this is one of those cases.

how did it change my life? Sadat story gave me strength. We realize that our everyday challenges are nothing compared to the ones Sadat had to face throughout his life.

Thanks and gratitude sir for your wonderful analysis of the poem in beautiful words Dear Smruti Ranjaniji, Your poem titled"A Look At Life-42" is a poem that brings into the forefront the salient features concerning life that we all need to practice in our day to day life. This life is to be a life that must be offered to others in selfless manner and services. We need to live our lives without expecting any reward from any quarters,we need to shed our desires so that we can be kept away from unhappiness all throughout our lives. If we engage in sharing than receiving in our lives, that can do us a world of good,we are subtly unhappy because we are more interested in receiving than giving freely to our fellow human beings. The funny thing about us human beings is that we are unhappy when we come to know about the happiness of our fellow human beings, this is the most selfish attitude of us human beings. We human beings all throughout our lives think about others,in fact we are so obsessed with what others do,as a result of which we often loose our peace of mind,we humans also have this imitation culture wherein we are so much interested in following others footsteps than having self-confidence attitude regarding our own personalities, talents, abilities and potentialities. If we are not happy about the successes of others,we can't be happy at all at any rate,we should have an open mindset to accept others joy and their successes in life, then only life will be a worthwhile thing indeed. To make matters worse,we live all throughout our lives with an attitude of jealous nature which can be very toxic and poisonous to ourselves in the long run.Let us all drive away our self-centred attitude and then come into the realm of love stock, block and barrel and every step of the way to lead a happy and contented life.Kudos to you for composing such a poem of magnificent nature. A LOOK AT LIFE-42
BY-SMRUTI RANJAN MOHANTY

The beauty of life
he knows who lives it for others
the feel of charity he feels who
shares his food with another
and remains hungry as such
the pleasure of giving he relishes
who gives without a condition
expecting nothing in reciprocation

The less you live for yourself
and more for others
the more you live for yourself
your little drops of love, affection
sacrifice and concern go a long way
and fetch you the ocean in return

You are not unhappy as such
you are not happy because you think
others are more happy and that
happiness of others is what disturbs you
makes you unhappy

Most of the life
you live thinking about others
their affluence and achievement
and others are always in your
focus and agenda
you are so obsessed and preoccupied with others, hardly any time left
for your own development
you compare yourself with others and feel sad
and carry that sadness with you
and distribute it among others
and make them sad
you are more concerned with
what you do not have and forget the fact that God has endowed you enough to make you happy and contented
you are not happy as you are
you want to be somebody else

You can not be happy
unless you enjoy others happiness
and fee their pangs of sorrow
you will remain with an agitated mind
and a pair of jealous eyes
till the very end

You live the whole of our life
nurturing jealousy and hatred
which gives you nothing expect
lots of heart burning
pain and mental agony
you are to think and reassess
for still some time is left
still you have it in you
to make a rich harvest and live
the rest of life with lots of common sense

Live life to the full
let love be your only language
and religion, the whole world your family
be with others in their moments
of happiness and sorrow
the whole world will be yours
you will have that satisfaction, peace
and tranquility of mind
till now eluding your grasp
a yogi's dream
which a man committed to
naked self interest
can hardly fathom

What are the books that can change people's lives?

#1. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho [Fable]
