My best friend. Yes, my best friend of five years. I would speak to her every single day. She would ping me from any corner of the earth and a single line of text from her would be reassuring and comforting. Either a good morning or a good night and the day would end in smiles. There were times when the mobile towers would play truant and I would frantically call her people to find out if she was okay. Such was our friendship.
One day, five years ago, it so happened that I couldn't get through to her. I called up her brother, dad but they too were not reachable. I was worried. We both were of the same age, in our late twenties and had a few common friends. She wasn't anywhere with them. It was 9.00 p.m. and there was no news about her. I had a restless night and the next day till late evening, I heard nothing from her. I decided to speak to my boyfriend kumar and drove down to his place. He lived alone. I rang the doorbell and it was opened by his friend who I was familiar with. I wondered what he was doing there and if kumar was fine. I sensed the friend's awkwardness as I watched him jiggling his legs, shuffling his hands, avoiding eye contact with me and fumbling for words. Soon a familiar voice floated down from the bedroom.. Kumar's. Was he sick? His voice didn't seem steady. I saw the silhouette of a female figure emerging from the room. She was swaying n seemed drugged. "Who is it?" mouthed the figure, not clearly visible as all lights had been switched off and the curtains drawn. The voice? OMG! My missing friend!! Behind her walked a semi clad, disheveled, wobbly kumar. The realisation that both had been two timing me behind my back hit home and I rushed in slapping them, pulling their hair and mouthing expletives before walking out.
Today, I'm happily married, married to Kumar. Yes, you heard right.
Haha. not the creep but a sweet one who seems to have eyes only for me.
