CHIT comes from Chhitta. Chitta means Chetna. In english we say Consciousness.. Chit is derived from Chhitta. It is a Derivative or Content of Consciousness. To give an brief explaination about these two term, because people have different standpoints of the same word. Chhitta means Consciousness.. Consciousness is the perception. We perceive through our 5 senses. So when any object comes under the consciousness through these five senses, in other words when any experience we get through our 5 senses, it may be see touch eat taste and smell, we perceive it through the Consciousness.. We experience it through our body and mind. But our senses perceive in Consciousness. After get registered the experience stored into our Stored house which is our Memory or Chhit. It is the content of consciousness. Because we perceived it through our senses but in Consciouness. It is a part of Consciousness.. Without Consciousness this body is dead.
