FORGIVENESS
One day Buddha was in assembly when a man walked in furious thinking Buddha is doing something wrong and drawing a huge crowd and they would just go to him close their eyes and meditate . He was a restless businessman and even his children were spending time with Buddha sitting idle and closing eyes when they could have engaged themselves in business making more money and ensuring their livelihood. So the father was very upset and decided to teach this man a lesson. With anger in his heart walked to Buddha confidently, but as soon as he approached Buddha all his thoughts disappeared but anger in him did not dissipate so he found himself speechless unable to express his emotions he spat on the face of Buddha.
Buddha in return was just smiling. His disciples were furious but couldn't do anything in their master's presence. And this man couldn't stay long either. He noticed his action had not drawn any reaction from the people around him or the Buddha who was just smiling as before. Once the man returned home couldn't erase the image of the smiling Buddha from his mind. He felt for the first time in his life he had met someone who had such an extraordinary reaction for such an disrespectful act. His whole body underwent a transformation. He felt his world is collapsed.
The next morning he got up early went to Buddha and fell at his feet and said " please forgive me, I did not know what I was doing ." Buddha replied " I cannot excuse you. " Everyone were shocked. Buddha was very compassionate and accepted everyone regardless of their past ,and now he is telling the man that he could not excuse him of his behavior.
Buddha explained, " why should I excuse you ,what wrong have you done that I should excuse your behavior. " The man said ," yesterday I came to your assembly and in my anger I spat on your face. I am the same person in front of you."
Buddha said ,"that person is not you anymore. If I ever meet the person who spat on my face then I will tell him to excuse you for me the person who's right here in front of me this moment is a wonderful man. You have done nothing wrong. "
In life true forgiveness is when you forgive a person that someone doesn't even know that he is being forgiven. That person shouldn't feel guilty for his deed. This is right kind of forgiveness.
