SHE KNEW BETTER

"She stood cutting the onions, thyme and tomatoes."

Short story below. Betty stood silently on the edge of the river, frozen solid in the peak of winter. She was watching a ice hole not far from where she stood. Some days ago a person had fallen through at night, the body had never been recovered. There was the constable looking around for clues today. She smirked, as if there were any, she should know, isn't it? She had informed the police of someone running frantically, screaming loudly day before yesterday. Her house was just at the edge of the banks of the river. She heard a splash, and then silence. That's what she told the constable, there was more nothing to add.

Once inside her house, Betty opened the freezer, and took out a piece of meat. She cut some onions, thyme, tomatoes, stir frying them and adding the salt and meat to it. She simply couldn't wait to have lunch, she was starving. She glanced at the freezer, noticing a leg sticking out. "Tut tut, where do you think you are running off too?" "Too late for that, don't you think?" she said as she opened the door talking to the bloodied man, half frozen to death, barely alive. The expression on his face was of horror and dread.

"I still see it sometime, but this is a long time ago. He had come in for a house inspection, but things got quickly out of hand. He didn't know his limits.Do you care to know the full details, officer?". Old Betty Parker nodded amiably.
