One gets old and loses his/her beauty. But the good qualities one possess do remain long after. The family one comes from may not be a great one, but the character of the person can be good. On the other hand, one hailing from a good family may not have good character. So, one must look for character, and not for family. One might have studied more, but may not be practically interested or have the ability to work, or use and apply his knowledge well. So, achievements must be noted. One may possess lot of wealth, but he may be a miser, which serves no purpose. Thus, the poet says the qualities one actually possesses is to be given credit.
