Make you feel that you are enough

While the hardships of living at sea are many, it comes with its share of extraordinary moments. Sumant Varma, a captain in the merchant navy, exhibited great nerve in a situation when the brain usually goes numb. In 2017, following warnings of a powerful tropical cyclone TS Mora, the two main sea ports of Bangladesh suspended operations and asked all ships to leave the ports. Heeding the warning, MV Dubai Knight, the ship with 25 crew members including Captain Varma and his wife, Vanya, sailed 200 nautical miles away from the route of the cyclone.

While the ships sailed to relative safety, there were fishermen at sea unaware of the impending danger. The next morning, when Vanya looked out the window, she saw some algae-like float with moving extrusions. On closer inspection, she realised they were human arms frantically waving out to catch attention of the watch -keepers in the ship. Capt Varma reacted immediately ordering the ship to be turned around, even though manoeuvering a loaded bulk carrier in the aftermath of the cyclone was difficult.
