The time when day and night submerged in the darkest of the darkest when deadly poison halahal resulted as an aftermath of churning of ocean. Yes all normal lives will only accept what is beneficial to them. No one dared to accept the poison which was result of their deeds only.
But it was Mahadev, mahakal who fearlessly came forward and consumed the poison! Seeing this Maa Parvati with her full devotion and love towards him sat with him and stopped the poison from spreading to whole body by staying awake whole night and holding his neck to prevent spreading of poison. His neck became blue because of that poison and Maa Parvati succeeded to stop the effect of poison. He drank the poison to save the world. This blue color gave him the name Neelakhanth.
Mahashivratri signifies righteousness, karma, kindness, one's duties and responsibilities towards the life, acceptance, truthfulness, awareness, awakening potentials of inner self, love which is the biggest power and devotion.
