The first lamp of Diwali is lit on the day of Dhanteras which is called Yama Deepak. Let us know why Yama Deepak is lit and what is its significance.

Yama lamp does not cause premature death 
Yama Deepak is lit on the day of Dhanteras. This lamp is dedicated to Yamraj, the god of death. It is believed that by donating a lamp to Lord Yama on this day, he becomes pleased. It is also said that if Yama Deepak is lit then no member of that house dies of untimely death.

Yama lamp should be lit in the evening of Dhanteras.
Because this lamp is dedicated to Lord Yama and his direction is considered to be south in the scriptures. So burn it only in the south direction. 
Yama lamp should never be lit inside the house. If you light the Yama lamp, then light it near the house and do not forget to keep it in the south direction.
After lighting the Yama lamp, no member of the family should leave the house. Light the Yama lamp only when all the family members come home.
