There must be a moment in a typical life of a school topper at which he or she or they come to understand that they must grow to become a more human version of themselves.

Being a topper doesn't entitle you to a wealthy future. It just gives you one of the narrowest edges in careers. Yes, I know that this doesn't apply to all the toppers because most of them do make decent living in life. But even they might like to comment that the attention they got as a topper didn't make any effect on the material prosperity of their life or any increased social status.
Of course, I am speaking from experience.
You might have a sly smile on your face while thinking about all the show off made by toppers when we were in school. Yeah. We dig that. We do. But it is kind of hard to digest that it was all momentary and we need to grow up. To a more mature version of ourselves.
Then it becomes serene, I guess.
