I am writing to express my interest in the doctoral program for the Agro Department at Skoltech University. Using my current and future research, I plan to explore the scope of genomic selection, high-throughput phenotyping, emerging genome editing tools, and speed breeding protocols for enhancing immunity in grain legumes to achieve legume-based dietary security and thus reduce the global hunger risk

While earning my Master’s in plant pathology at the University of Agriculture, I developed an interest in minimizing strawberry post-harvest diseases by managing humidity and temperature. Predominant pathogens were controlled through novel chemistry postharvest fungicides and plant extracts. After my graduation, I joined Pulses Research Institute, AARI Faisalabad, as an Internee where I worked on the Genetic improvement of Lentil against Rust and formulation of production technologies for yield maximization. In Nov 2018 I started work with Dr. Mehboob-ur-Rahman, PoP at the Nuclear Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering under the project entitled “Characterization of mutants derived from EMS-derived Gandum-1 for rust and drought tolerance for sustaining wheat yield in Pakistan”. Our lab worked on the genotypic and phenotypic characterization of mutant lines of wheat using QTL mapping and Genome Wide Association Selection (GWAS) tools for studying their response against rust and drought by using microsatellite markers. We have worked with ~50 mutants and found some resistance lines. Two articles were published focusing on the molecular breeding of wheat mutants. In March 2022, I was selected as a Research Associate in a cotton project, with the aiming of the introgression of NIBGE-developed genes (cry2Ab and 2xEPSPS) in virus and heat resistant/tolerant advanced cotton lines containing the cry1Ac gene.

After gaining a lot of experience in my field, I want to pursue my Ph.D. at Skoltech University which provides knowledge and skills to research and investigate real-world problems associated with food security, quality, and wellness. I have briefly studied your research work that focuses on the Quantitative Disease Resistance of legumes. I like to work on the anthracnose disease of white lupin and focus on unrevealing the genetic expression of the genes that are involved in the defense mechanism of white lupin for resistance against Colletotrichum lupini. The complete genome sequence of the white lupin has allowed genetic breeding programs to select genes of interest. The implementation of omics technologies such as genomics, proteomics, and transcriptomics will revolutionize the understanding of C. lupini, and shed light on the functional attributes and mechanisms of action underlying the ability of probiotics to impact host health (white lupin) and starter cultures to drive food fermentation. Recently, a molecular machine from CRISPR-Cas systems has redefined the gene editing toolbox and democratized the ability to alter the genome of microorganisms. An integrated approach in which CRISPR-based genome editing will inform by omics studies will poise to enable the engineering of microorganisms and the formulation of microbiomes impacting the food supply chain. Crop genetic resources are the key reservoir for exploring resistant genotypes in grain legumes. Considerable amounts of genetic variability for anthracnose will be captured in white lupin that could be used to improve anthracnose resistance in elite cultivars

I don’t know whether I have to write it here or not, but I want to tell you that the main motivation that pushed me to take the initiative of foreign education is the girls of my community. My parents usually heard “why are you wasting your efforts and money on her, she is not a boy that gives back to you”, but luckily I have crossed all the hurdles and now I am the first university graduate in my community. It’s heartbrokenly seen for me when a girl obtains 98-99% marks from high school and she was asked to bear the burden of domestic chores and take care of her family. The main obstacle that stands in the way of their education is that they are girls. I want to translate their dream of education into reality and navigate the myth that girls were born to burn their lives in the fuel of the kitchen and that education is not the property of boys. I like to become that key that opens the door of their education to unleash their potential to contribute economically as well as socially. I have initiated that step by calling the mothers of girls to tell them that the education of these young women is the beginning of a virtuous cycle, for themselves, their families, and the entire community. Since 2013, I am providing home tutoring facilities to those girls who are not allowed to go outside for education.
