The simulation hypothesis or simulation theory proposes that all of reality, including the Earth and the universe, is in fact an artificial simulation, most likely a computer simulation.
.
It's actually a topic of research and not just a fictional subject.
To get an idea of the concept, you can watch the 1999 movie, "THE MATRIX".

What are the real life possibility of alien life existence?

This is a very hard question to answer because answer is not a simple one but a complex one. Before I go into the existence of elien, first let us think how can we even find it, I mean what are the obstacles standing in our way.

PROBLEM 1: Even if we find elien, it probably not something we expect to see in movies.

Well, in reality, sorry to disappointment everyone, even if we find elien, it will be very different. It could be single cell organism.

It could be like bacteria.

It could be something that we couldn't see through our naked eye.

Above mentioned picture is the rare example of sun's photos in a various wavelength which can not be seen through the naked eyes.

It could be more than fourth dimension beings (yes, it is possible in theory).

PROBLEM 2: This universe is so huge that even if we find evidence of elien life, it is beyond our mortal lifetime to do something about it. Because even tiny portions of the universe is beyond our comprehension.

So then the question is - is there no way to find out truth? Absolutely, not. Here's the recent science discovery suggest -

Every one of us is made of atoms that once part of the exploding star, including atomic carbon, nitrogen and oxygen- some of the fundamental ingredients of life. Over billions of years, these ingredients condense to form gas clouds, new stars and planets which means that the ingredients therefore life beyond earth is scattered across the universe. Earlier this year, a team of scientists estimated that about 4.5 billion years ago at least one fifth of Mars was covered in an ocean more than 450 feet. Any signs of life could be swam in those waters could there be hidden in the Martian soil. But water is not enough, you also need time. As it happened, a study in last October discovered that water had existed on Mars 200 million years longer than previously anticipated. What more there was life on earth same time as some of the lakes on Mars.

Astroides and comets are key formation of life on earth, scientists think. In particular, comet impacts, according to a news report in last August, likely caused amino acids to combine and form building block of life. From what we know about solar system formation, there are other comets in other planetary systems that could be doing the same thing right now. Jupiter's tiny moon Europa is scattered with brown veins that are suspected to show where warmer, dirtier liquid water in the moon's mantle seeped through its crust. Europa could harper more water than earth which is why both American and Europe are investing hundreds of millions of dollars into designs for future missions that would search life beneath its surface. Beyond Europa there is Saturn's moon Euceladus, which scientists confirms this month houses a giant, global ocean beneath its outer shell. Like Europa, Euceladus’s ocean is ideal place where life beyond earth could live. Even more convincing evidence for life on Euceladus was included in two papers published in earlier this year. They strongly suggest that hydrothermal vents - the same kind that may have spawned life on earth - seem to be lining up on moon's ocean floors. In addition to those on Europa and Euceladus, vast subsurface oceans could exist at least dozen objects in our solar system, planetary scientists suspect. The problem of detecting life on any of these reaching the watery mantle that exist hundreds of miles underground. Besides Earth, Saturn's largest moon Titan is the only body in the solar system with lakes on its surface. These lakes would not spawn similar life to Earth because they are made of liquid methane, not water. However, earlier this year a group at Cornell showed how methane-based, oxygen-free living cells could exist on Titan. It's possible that life can only form and thrive on Earth-like planets, which would mean our only chance of detecting aliens is on planets beyond our solar system. Last July, scientists detected an Earth-like planet 1,400 light-years away. Its size, orbit, sun, and age provide the "opportunity for life to arise somewhere on the surface ... should all the necessary ingredients and conditions for life on this planet [exist]," one scientist said. The famous Drake equation allows us to estimate how many alien civilizations might exist in the Milky Way. It looks like this: N=R*(fp)(ne)(fl)(fi)(fc)L, with each variable defined below. With basic statistics, this equation suggests there are potentially thousands, even millions, of alien civilizations out there.

R*=How fast star forms in our galaxy.

fp=The percentages of star that have galaxy.

ne=Number of Earth like planets around each stars that has planets.

fl=The percentages of earth like planets that develop life.

fc=The percentages of intelligent species the go on to create technology that could be detected by a outside civilization like ours. One example of this is radio signal.

L=The average number of years the advance civilization release detectable signals.

If there are millions of intelligent alien civilizations out there, many ask, then why haven't we heard from them? It could be that our home galaxy, the Milky Way, is not an entirely hospitable galaxy for life, according to a scientific report last month that suggests other galaxies in the universe could host 10,000x more habitable planets than the Milky Way.We're all made of heavy atoms forged in the explosions of supermassive stars. This not only connects us to the universe, but highlights the possibility of alien life, explains famed astrophysicist and director of the Hayden Planetarium, Neil deGrasse Tyson: "These ingredients become part of gas clouds that condense, collapse, form the next generation of solar systems — stars with orbiting planets. And those planets now have the ingredients for life itself."
