Chitra, what do you want for your birthday?
Pat came the reply accompanied by giggles..'An elephant'
My friend was flabbergasted. 'Are you crazy, chits?'. You and your humour. 'tell me seriously what would you like?' countered she. 'An elephant, a huge one' I repeat n walk away.
Well, comes my birthday n she takes me to a zoo. The elephant act is due. Three elephants walk onto the stage. We are in the front row. They come and stand a few feet ahead of me and simultaneously lift their trunks. Whoosh! they spray water on me and I cringe, instantly covering my face. Happy Birthday song is being played on the loudspeaker and my name is announced calling me inside the enclosure. Shouldn't I be happy? I am going to be taken for a ride. My friend gives me a sudden firm push. The mahout brings the elephant closer. It lifts its trunk and brings it close to me. I give a terrifying scream. Somebody is shaking me. I notice my friend looking at me. I sit up on the bed and look around. OMG! What a dream! Its my birthday today n we are out partying at a resort. The other friends walk into my room with a cake to wish me. Surprise! Surprise! The cake is in the shape of an elephant, just like me, eh? I giggle. I have always refered to the bulky me as a baby elephant. My birthday gift from them? Beautiful white ceramic elephant plant pots, elephant wall arts and zen elephant garden sculpture. I laugh out loud, an elephantine laugh.
At least I did not get the real one, i think with amusement. Well, wouldn't that have literally been..a white elephant?
I walk with an elephant gait, amusing my friends. I announce to them 'Today we are all gonna have a blast.. elephant size with love from a baby elephant.
Giggles and laughter follows. The birthday girl is happy.
