White Shakuntala

Little Shakuntala's mother Maneka was a celestial nymph. One day, Maneka was called back to the heavens by Lord Indra. Shakuntala could not go with her. So it was decided that Shakuntala would be left to grow up in an ashram, deep within the forests. The aged holy sage, Rishi Kanva, would be her foster parent, henceforth. Shakuntala grew up to be a lovely maiden.
One day, Shakuntala was taking a walk in the forests when she heard a heart wrenching cry. Shakuntala poured tender words of comfort. King Dushyant, who had struck the deer unwittingly, was watching her. Pretty maiden, pardon me for this mistake, King dushyant bowed low in front of Shakuntala. Shakuntala responded to his pleadings and agreed to forgive him. But there is a condition, good king! she added. And what is that? he curiously inquired. "You will stay at the ashram for a few days and nurse this poor deer back to health.
So be it! declared the king. In the course of his stay, Dushyant fell hopelessly in love with Shakuntala.
Soon the two were married. Some time after this event, Dushyant had to return to his kingdom due to pressing circumstances which entailed war. Naturally, he could not take Shakuntala! "I am going for a while but will soon come to get you," he told his weeping bride. "When will that be? asked Shakuntala, tears streaming down her face. "Here, take this ring. It has my name engraved on it. Count the letters, one for each day and by the time you reach the last, I will come for you, my beloved. He mollified a distraught Shakuntala came to know that she was pregnant. Her happiness was boundless! She dreamily wandered around her hut, completely lost in her thoughts.
