White Shakuntala -3 A bonny son was born to her after a lapse of time. She called him Bharat! He grew up to be a brave lad living amongst lions and tigers. One day, a fisherman at Dushyant's Kingdom, brought home fish to chop and cook. From the innards of the fish, he scooped out a ring. "It looks like the King's emblem ring! Let me ask. The fishermen presented himself to the King and showed him the ring. Just as soon as Dushyant saw the ring, he clutched his heart and whispered, "Oh! My Shakuntala! Memory of his marriage came flooding back. Dushyant raced towards the forests. Subsequently, he stopped for a break in the woods. Giggles and gurgling were coming from a clearing at a distance. Curiously, Dushyant moved up to see. In the patch, a young boy was playing with tigers and lion cubs. He had opened the mouth of one tiger cub and was counting its teeth! This is no hermit's son, thought the king. Lucky is the king who has a son like this. "You are a brave boy! Dushyant commented. What is your name? The boy proudly said, I am Bharat! Son of King Dushyant. "What? exclaimed Dushyant. You do not believe me. come, ask my mother. She lives in a nearby hut. Dushyant inquisitively followed the boy. When they arrived, Shakuntala came out from the hut to receive her son. She gasped when she saw Dushyant. Dushyant looked up and his face broke into smiles. "My Shakuntala! At last I have found you." The king and his beautiful queen lived happily for a long, long time. Bharat succeeded his father and became the greatest king the world had ever seen. White Shakuntala -2 Girl, give me some food! came the voice of a sage at the entrance of the hut. Shakuntala ignored the call! Not for any other reason but for the fact that she was wholly pre-occupied with thoughts of Dushyant. But this was not the voice of any ordinary sage. This was sage Durvasa, the mighty Rishi, who was dreaded for his short -temper and powerful curses. After two calls, the sage lost his temper and he roared, "Silly girl, let the one who spellbinds your attention forget you! His roar startled Shakuntala and she ran after the sage asking for forgiveness. Hearing her out, the sage said, "I cannot undo my curse, but I can amend it. He will forget you but when he sees this ring you wear, he will remember you! Durvasa's curse took effect. Weeks when by and there was no word from the king. Shakuntala decided to visit the king herself. En-route she had to cross a river. While sitting in the boat, Shakuntala again started day dreaming. She softly sang; skimming the waters with her fingers. A terrible thing happened! The ring from her fingers slipped and fell deep into the waters! Shakuntala did not notice and she blissfully arrived at the courts, hoping for a wonderful reunion with Dushyant. Who are you? Dushyant asked. Yes, the sage's curse was working. Dushyant had no memory of the beautiful damsel claiming to be his wife! Sire, See, Shakuntala lifted her hands to show him the ring. "😮💨, where is my ring! Oh dear! Well, without the ring, the king could not recognise her, so she had to leave. Sadly, she went back to the forest and quietly lived her life. (to be continued) ©Sanjoy Khuman #Shakuntala -2

White Shakuntala Little Shakuntala's mother Maneka was a celestial nymph. One day, Maneka was called back to the heavens by Lord Indra. Shakuntala could not go with her. So it was decided that Shakuntala would be left to grow up in an ashram, deep within the forests. The aged holy sage, Rishi Kanva, would be her foster parent, henceforth. Shakuntala grew up to be a lovely maiden. One day, Shakuntala was taking a walk in the forests when she heard a heart wrenching cry. Shakuntala poured tender words of comfort. King Dushyant, who had struck the deer unwittingly, was watching her. Pretty maiden, pardon me for this mistake, King dushyant bowed low in front of Shakuntala. Shakuntala responded to his pleadings and agreed to forgive him. But there is a condition, good king! she added. And what is that? he curiously inquired. "You will stay at the ashram for a few days and nurse this poor deer back to health. So be it! declared the king. In the course of his stay, Dushyant fell hopelessly in love with Shakuntala. Soon the two were married. Some time after this event, Dushyant had to return to his kingdom due to pressing circumstances which entailed war. Naturally, he could not take Shakuntala! "I am going for a while but will soon come to get you," he told his weeping bride. "When will that be? asked Shakuntala, tears streaming down her face. "Here, take this ring. It has my name engraved on it. Count the letters, one for each day and by the time you reach the last, I will come for you, my beloved. He mollified a distraught Shakuntala came to know that she was pregnant. Her happiness was boundless! She dreamily wandered around her hut, completely lost in her thoughts.
