Air is all around us, but we cannot see it. Air is a mixture of different gases.Air is essential for people to breathe, and so are many other animals and plants.During respiration, organisms take in oxygen from the air and release carbon dioxide.The air in the Earth’s atmosphere is composed of about 78 percent nitrogen and 21 percent oxygen.There are many other gases in very small amounts in the air, such as carbon dioxide, neon, and hydrogen.Although air is mostly gas, it also contains many small particles, and these particles are called aerosols.Some aerosols—such as dust and pollen—are naturally carried by the wind.Air also contains solids and liquids. Solids in the air include pollen, dust, and soot.Air is the basic building block, without which life itself cannot exist.We are very fortunate that on earth we have an atmosphere full of air.The air in our atmosphere acts as insulation, keeping the Earth from getting too cold or too hot.Another type of gas ozone present in the air also protects us from excessive sunlight.Even on a calm day, the air around us is always moving.Breathing is a process that gives energy to animals and plants through the air to eat, grow and live!.When humans and animals breathe, we release an odorless gas called carbon dioxide or CO2.Air looks light, but a lot of it pushes down on the Earth’s surface.Humidity is the amount of water that the air can hold before it rains.You feel higher air pressure at sea level because the whole atmosphere is exerting pressure on you.
The air pressure is less at the top of the mountain because the atmosphere there pushes you down
