Black SOMETHING I LOOK AT-114 BY-SMRUTI RANJAN MOHANTY THE UNIQUE 'I' Definitely, i am not you and you are me. We are different, neither you are inferior to me nor i am superior to you, we are unique in our own way. Let our relationship flourish on the appreciation of that unique I. Look around! just impossible to find two things alike, even two things from a source may look alike, but they are not exactly the same. There lies the beauty and mystery of creation, the craftsmanship of the Almighty. There is always one, nothing like two, one and one makes two, but two exact ones are not possible, how can you make them combine into two? The most intelligent cannot compare with the dullest of the dull, both excel in their own field, and there is hardly anything to compare in between. You are socialised to look at things in a particular way. You call someone beautiful and someone ugly and your views are shaped as per the attributes of beauty forced into your mind since childhood. You call someone good and someone bad as per the collective conscience and the values you internalised, The window through which you look at is the society in which you are born and groomed. The reality is you are as beautiful as good and as intelligent as anyone else. The way to a beautiful life lies in accepting and appreciating the reality that we are unique and different in our own way. our unique difference is to make us complement and supplement and interdependent to meet each other need and requirement. We will remain unique, till at a different level, we meet and become one where remains nothing except that all-pervasive unique 'I' the vast ocean of consciousness and bliss wherein melt all ego and identity. Here is the critical appreciation of my poem"A LOOK AT LIFE-21" by non-other than the eminent poet and internationally acclaimed literary critic Prof Cijo Joseph Channel. Thanks and gratitude sir for your brilliant words of appreciation Dear Smruti Ranjaniji, Your poem titled"A Look At Life-21" is a great exposition regarding the manifold interpretations of what it is meant to be independent. Independence is an internal mindset if we are free internally, everything comes around bit by bit and piece by piece. It is to be a way of life. To be in an independent state of affairs would mean love towards one another and respect for the dignities of others. Freedom does mean that we need to give importance to the freedom of others, it also does mean adherence to justice,fair-play and equality. Freedom is a positive attitude which generates positive vibes in the society. Freedom is all about a mentality to share and care for each other. Lack of fear is the first sign of freedom. Real freedom transcends above boundaries, borders, barriers, barricades, controls and bridles. Freedom is a concept that enlightens and encourages one and all. Freedom is all about the ability to absorb the manifold aspects of life without fear and favour and also without any bias or discrimination. When freedom attains these above-mentioned characteristics, then it becomes really a heaven of freedom indeed envisaged by the great poet of India, Tagore.Kudos to you for composing such a poem of exquisite nature. The Text .............. A LOOK AT LIFE-21 ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Independence is a state of mind A way of life To be internalised and nourished To make one independent Of pride and prejudice Hatred and jealousy Violence and fanaticism Fear and false vanity And all those negative emotions That make one badly respond To whims and irrationality It is beautifully reflected In what you think In what you do How you approach life And look at others With whom you interact With whom you do not It is an atmosphere That offers you the best To be your own self An opportunity to flower and flourish And make your dream a reality It is not a licence To do anything You feel like Is always subject to decency and morality And other's right to enjoy The same with all dignity copyright@smruti ranjan 15.08.2015 If I’m asked to point out a prominent Indian poet whose writes in English touch the serious readers of the globe, I’ll have to choose Smruti Ranjan Mohanty as one of the many that I know, He was born on 1st January/1963 at Bamikhal, Odisha ( India). He is an M.A. in Political Science from Utkal University. Though he serves the Govt. of Udisha as a Finance Officer, he keeps on penning beautiful poems, short stories and critical essays in English and Odisha . His writes often appear in various Indian newspapers and journals. No need to say how his beautiful poems enrich the walls of various esteemed poetic groups The poem that caught my attention while I was going through the writes published on 15th August in the ‘Poetry for Peace’ wall, specially keeping in mind the occasion of the India’s 70th Independence Day celebration was “ A LOOK AT LIFE -21". Instead of writing something on the comment box, I decided to take up the poem for a critical exploration. It is one of the poet’s efforts to look at life too. On the surface level the poet seems to express his views on the concept of independence. He starts the poem with a simple definition, stating that independence is a state of mind and a way of life. He thinks that one has to be free from false pride, prejudice, hatred, jealousy, violence, fanaticism, fear and vanity if he wants to enjoy the real pride of being independent. An independent man must avoid negative emotions that can easily motivate him to respond to whims and irrationality. What he wants from his countrymen on this auspicious occasion is that they should refine their mental setup and purify their minds in order to feel the real pride of independence. The poet thinks that a man’s interactions with others show how far independent his personality is. It is an atmosphere in which anybody can feel free and homely in fulfilling his dreams. But it is not simply a licence to do anything. It refers to a good citizen’s moralities and responsibilities towards the nation and its people. There is no hard word or any difficult image in the poem. The poet’s simple approach to the hardest external question on the concept concerned makes the readers feel and internalize its answer. Everybody except the pretenders knows the answer. The problem lies in their approaches to life. 1.“It is an atmosphere That offers you the best To be your own self.......” 2.“It is not a licence To do anything you feel like Is always subject to decency and morality” The trends that the modern poets seem to have set induce the readers to find out what they do not see or understand in the very easy words and expressions they read repeatedly in the poem. I think the greatness of a poet and his poetic world lies in this riddle. It is my earnest hope that Smruti Ranjan Mahanty will keep on composing great poems for us.
