The functions of the three internal organs are now described : स्वालक्षण्यं वृत्तिस्रयस्य सैषा भवत्यसामान्या । सामान्यकरणवृत्ति: प्रणाद्या वायवः पञ्च ।। It directly means : Of the three internal organs, their own characteristics are their function: this is peculiar to each. The common modification of the instruments is the five airs such as praan/(प्राण) and the rest. [ The term 'swalashanyam' in the above verse means those having thier own distinct characteristics and they are the Mahat, the Great Principle(i.e. supreme nature), ahankaar, the I―Principle and the 'manas', the mind. The distinct characteristics are thier natures too. They are the properties which serve as the distinguishing mark of each internal organ.
