Thanks and gratitude to Prof Cijo Joseph Chennelil, the eminent poet and literary critc for his fabulous critical appreciation of my poem 'A LOOK AT LIFE-4'. Thank you very much, sir, for your wonderful words of appreciation Smruti Ranjaniji, Your poem titled"A Look At Life -4"is a poem that looks at life from various strands, angles and dimensions. As we go through different phases of life, we come across different circumstances and situations which teach us about various aspects of life one way or other. Whatever, it is, life should be cherished to the hilt because when it is gone, it is the endgame, so whatever good things that we can do in this life, we have to do with atmost earnestness and consideration. From childhood to old age, life teaches us many things, in early childhood we are tinged with innocence, then in the adolescent period,we are prone to the nitty grittes of life culminating in antics of various hues and colours, in the middle age,we function as people of obligations and responsibilities and finally in the old age, we wait for the chariot of death to arrive with a sense of resignation. In fact from birth to death, life is a constant struggle and a pillar to post running but we need to enjoy life imbibing its essence and real spirit, otherwise, we shall regret about it at the end. If we are bogged down by the responsibilities and high pressured jobs in our lives, then the prime period of our lives pass by us without ourselves noticing it a bit. Kudos to you for composing such a poem of magnificent nature. Written by Cijo Joseph Chennelil. Here is the critical appreciation of my poem 'SOMETHING I LOOK AT-53' by non other than Prof Cijo Joseph Chennelil, eminent poet and Internationally acclaimed lierary critic in beautiful words. Thanks and gratitude sir for your wonderful words of appreciation Dear Smruti Ranjaniji Your poem titled"Something I Look at-53" extols rightly the glory and essence of book reading and its benefits to the yonder sky.Books are to be the constant companions of human beings, they can lead human beings into the world of imagination and aesthetic sensibility. When books are given primary importance in the life of human beings, things become more consolidated and firmed up for us,so that we can confront the daily realities of life with enthusiasm, excitement, pleasure and deeper comprehension. An association with books from childhood days can fill us with wonders and manifold positive possibilities. The books can furnish us with so many advantages such as the infusion of a creative mindset,a humane bent of mind,a lovely discerning attitude towards life in general,a compassionate stance towards fellow human beings,a sensitive mentality,a deep-rooted knowledge regarding various issues concerning the society, the acquisition of well-entrenched wisdom, the farsighted inclination towards various matters, the quest to follow the cherished principles of life, the intention to lead an upright life and an orientation towards a life of righteousness. Before all these present electronic gadgets came into the picture, the books had acted as avenues of real knowledge systems of the world. The books also bestow upon us positive vibes, disciplined life and egalitarian vision of life.Today we have everything but the human relationships have taken a beating like never before, the gap between our words and deeds has increased phenomenally, the physical boundaries are reduced but the mental barriers have grown in a substantial fashion. Our value system has taken a battering and we reside in a society which gives less importance to the moralities and ethical principles of life because we don't have comprehensive and holistic accommodative attitude towards the needs of our fellow human beings, still in today's world the books can usher in a world of creative, aesthetic, artistic, imaginative and blissful nature to all of us.Kudos to you for composing such a poem of magnificent nature. KNOW THE POET AND PEEP INTO HIS POEM ********************************************************* Smruti Ranjan Mohanty and His Poem “ A LOOK AT LIFE-21 ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, By Bipul Ch.Kalita ............................. The Text .............. A LOOK AT LIFE-21 ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Independence is a state of mind A way of life To be internalised and nourished To make one independent Of pride and prejudice Hatred and jealousy Violence and fanaticism Fear and false vanity And all those negative emotions That make one badly respond To whims and irrationality It is beautifully reflected In what you think In what you do How you approach life And look at others With whom you interact With whom you do not It is an atmosphere That offers you the best To be your own self An opportunity to flower and flourish And make your dream a reality It is not a licence To do anything You feel like Is always subject to decency and morality And other's right to enjoy The same with all dignity copyright@smruti ranjan 15.08.2015 If I’m asked to point out a prominent Indian poet whose writes in English touch the serious readers of the globe, I’ll have to choose Smruti Ranjan Mohanty as one of the many that I know, He was born on 1st January/1963 at Bamikhal, Odisha ( India). He is an M.A. in Political Science from Utkal University. Though he serves the Govt. of Udisha as a Finance Officer, he keeps on penning beautiful poems, short stories and critical essays in English and Odisha . His writes often appear in various Indian newspapers and journals. No need to say how his beautiful poems enrich the walls of various esteemed poetic groups The poem that caught my attention while I was going through the writes published on 15th August in the ‘Poetry for Peace’ wall, specially keeping in mind the occasion of the India’s 70th Independence Day celebration was “ A LOOK AT LIFE -21". Instead of writing something on the comment box, I decided to take up the poem for a critical exploration. It is one of the poet’s efforts to look at life too. On the surface level the poet seems to express his views on the concept of independence. He starts the poem with a simple definition, stating that independence is a state of mind and a way of life. He thinks that one has to be free from false pride, prejudice, hatred, jealousy, violence, fanaticism, fear and vanity if he wants to enjoy the real pride of being independent. An independent man must avoid negative emotions that can easily motivate him to respond to whims and irrationality. What he wants from his countrymen on this auspicious occasion is that they should refine their mental setup and purify their minds in order to feel the real pride of independence. The poet thinks that a man’s interactions with others show how far independent his personality is. It is an atmosphere in which anybody can feel free and homely in fulfilling his dreams. But it is not simply a licence to do anything. It refers to a good citizen’s moralities and responsibilities towards the nation and its people. There is no hard word or any difficult image in the poem. The poet’s simple approach to the hardest external question on the concept concerned makes the readers feel and internalize its answer. Everybody except the pretenders knows the answer. The problem lies in their approaches to life. 1.“It is an atmosphere That offers you the best To be your own self.......” 2.“It is not a licence To do anything you feel like Is always subject to decency and morality” The trends that the modern poets seem to have set induce the readers to find out what they do not see or understand in the very easy words and expressions they read repeatedly in the poem. I think the greatness of a poet and his poetic world lies in this riddle. It is my earnest hope that Smruti Ranjan Mahanty will keep on composing great poems for us.
