I pass through the tempting entrance Of a diminutive cafe, near home. I glance through its comely facade And plunge into the ancient whispers Of glorious meets and veiled retreats. A familiar face comes to mind And I hastily erase the memories queuing-- Inveigling to suffuse me, again, with pain. I cease my erratic plodding And take a few defensive breaths. "No, not this time," I dare beg my psyche To cease the hurtling ache that threatens To crumble this new-found deterrent, I have. Yet, a cantankerous murmur remains-- Cajoling a bittersweet remembrance Of someone from that forgotten past. Ah. Truly, old ghosts cannot stay hushed; They inundate me with a clarity That I've been eradicating from my blood.
