The king of beasts

It has been more than 18 years since I last used coloured pencils (due to the bad experience I had with it - cheap pencils). I am so glad that I have picked it up again and tried. I used Faber-Castell polychromos (oil based) and Luminance 6901 (wax based). For those of you who have paid attention to my works since last year, you may notice that I went from mixed media (acrylic and inks) to Charcoal drawing to Oil painting to inks and watercolour and finally settled down here with coloured pencils. The reason being is that the coloured pencils I use now meet my requirement and taste, they can beautifully render an image to very detailed piece and save time. They are now my favourite mediums in combination with inks, watercolour and acrylic for my upcoming pieces. Thank you so much for staying with me, I will keep producing art to repay you guys!

An Alphabet of Animals Carved from Crayons and Other Miniature Pencil Works by Diem Chau

An artist’s medium is as varied as imagination allows and you’ll find hundreds, maybe even thousands of them here on Colossal. But occasionally a medium itself is altered to create an artwork, as is the case with Seattle artist Diem Chau who works within the narrow confines of graphite pencil leads and colored crayons to carve her delicate sculptures of animals and people.
A native of Vietnam, Chau and her family came to America as refugees in 1986 and would later receive a BFA from Cornish College of the Arts after which she began exhibiting her works in New York, Miami, Seattle and Los Angeles.

A Miniature Landscape of Elephants Carved From the Tip of a Pencil by Cindy Chinn

Artist Cindy Chinn recently created a commissioned work for the California-based Epiphany Elephant Museum, a miniature graphite carving of a family of elephants. The piece, titled “Elephant Walk,” features the animals on the tip of a carpenter’s pencil alongside trees that are dotted to imitate foliage. To accurately carve the minuscule materials, Chinn utilizes a magnifying lamp and trinocular microscope. If you are interested in commissioning a piece, or would like to see her other carvings, she has works for sale on her Etsy store.
You can see more images of her miniature carved works on her Facebook, blog, and website.
