MY MOTHER'S FIRST LETTER TO ME

My mother. Ah! she was a complete package. A lady whose brains and beauty were the envy of the whole town. She was the vice-president of a well known firm, a rarity for women during her time. I used to bask in her reflected glory. My dad was an unassuming man and worked in the Gulf, arriving home once in six months.

I wish to narrate an incident that effectively changed my life. I was in the second year of an elite college. Lots of pocket money and snobbish to the core. A new boyfriend every month. I was riding high on my inflated ego. I remember the day. It was 15th August. I returned home late evening to an empty house. Mom wasn't in. I was surprised. It was a holiday. She is otherwise normally home by 9.00 or maybe 11.00 in case of a late official meeting. I tried her phone.Shucks! switched off. I waited till 11.00. Fear was washing over me. I had never been alone after 11.00. No news from mom. My restlessness saw me pacing the room. I called my closest friend. Thankfully she rushed home immediately. The clock showed 2.00 a.m. I was almost in tears. My friend was on her mobile. She suddenly noticed a sheet of attractive paper pad and casually opened it. Her face fell as she read something written in it. The pad changed hands. My gut instinct told me it was something to do with my mother. I was right. It was a letter written in her neat, legible writing and was, of course, addressed to me. Her first letter. An earth shattering piece of news with just one line:
'I've found love and I am going away with him.' Her first and last letter ever to me.
