सुनो इक शजर की है यह दासताॉं, जो खड़ा रहता था वहॉं, मसजिद का सेहेन था जहॉं, उस के फल गिरते थे उसी सेहेन में, पर उसकी जड़ें तो फैली थीं वहॉं तलक, पास के मनदिर के छोर वाली नदी तलक, पानी मिलता था उसे, उस नदी से, उस पेड़ पर थे बसते वे अमन पसंद परिंदे, जो कभी मनदिर की घंटी से सुर मिलाते और कभी अज़ॉं के संग गाते, फिर वह भयानक रात आई, कुछ वेहशी अपने संग लाई, आकाश में धुवॉं उठने लगा, और वह गांव जलने लगा, करीम की जान कमलेश ने बचाई, करीमन बुआ ने कमला देवी के घर पनाह पाई, मचा कर तबाही वह वेहशी चले गए, पर जाते जाते वह उस पेड़ को भी जला गए, जला गए वह शहर की एकता की निशानी, और कर दी एक दीवार खड़ी नफरत की अंजानी, उसके बाद वे अमन पसंद परिंदे कभी ना लौटे, उन लोगों की तरह जो उस रात को छोड़ गए थे साथ.......
