I see her gobbling some meds and chugging it all down with a glass of water. Her hair is uncombed and her bare feet look really cold. She heads back to bed and remains there, looking listless and far away. I enter her room and attempt to speak, "I'm sorry. Please, let's talk already. I--". She cuts me off and answers her phone. "Hello? No, not today. Sorry," she tells whoever is at the other end of the line. I back off and retreat to the hallway, yet again feeling deprived. I place my tiny medal on the hallway table. It stays there, sparkling in that cheap, baudy way, as if deriding my pathetic plea for a trickle of love. "Stupid girl," the chortling bauble mocks, "whatever you do, she won't notice you anyway."
