ZIRO, A FLASHBACK (CHAPTER 1) "I'd rather embrace death than be caught by the Chinese and taken as prisoners!" Yes, my father made the same remarks, and the then-officer (APO-1, Ziro, Subansiri, NEFA, now Arunachal Pradesh) reacted with the following statement: "Don't worry about that. If such a situation occurs, I will shoot you first, and then myself.” My father, Shri P.M.S. Namboodiry, relieved his colleague Biswas from the P & T (now BSNL) wireless station Ziro (located in NEFA—North East Frontier Agency—the present name is Arunachal Pradesh) and took charge of the wireless station, Ziro, on May 13, 1962. His responsibilities included communicating from Ziro to Guwahati, maintaining the wireless equipment, accumulators for working wireless sets, and engine generators for charging accumulators, and establishing radio telephony (through wireless) with Shillong at a scheduled hour. In fact, this wireless mode was the only way for Ziro to connect to the rest of the country. All Indians will remember 1962 as the year of the Sino-India conflict (also known as the China-India war), in which my father played an important role, although not as a front-line soldier, but as a wireless operator, a role that he equally portrayed as a soldier. Ziro is an enchanting valley surrounded by the majestic Himalayan and Patkai ranges of mountains. It's set amidst a dense forest of vibrant flora and fauna. The chirping of birds, the cool breeze, the swaying trees, and the jingling streams fascinated the residents and all the visitors strolling through the valley. It is one of the oldest towns in Arunachal Pradesh. Famous for its scenic beauty, Ziro offers breathtaking views of terraced rice fields, dense forests, and meandering rivers. My father's accommodation was in his office (wireless station) opposite the football ground, with the main road snaking in between. Being a tiny town nestled in the mountains, people's movements were limited; hence, they were well-knitted, especially those from other states. My father, too, had a gang of friends, including from our home state of Kerala. Some were with family, and some were bachelors, just like my father. Life was so pleasant and blissful in the lap of mother nature until, like an avalanche, the Chinese invasion snowballed into the state of Arunachal Pradesh. Recap Walking back home every day during my school days in Kozhikode (Kerala), my mind used to be storming with the day's activities, thus ignoring all other happenings around me. It seems there's always a cost to  our ignorance. For approximately a week, I ignored the activities of cockroaches in my room, which had a wooden box as their hub. When these cockroaches became a nuisance and disrupted my studies, I made the decision to eradicate them permanently. As I opened the box, my blood ran cold, and badly, I wished to shout and call my father. But I couldn't, as I was gasping for breath! Uff, these cockroaches... CHAPTER 3 I needed to call my father and yell loudly. Instead, I was stammering, SSSSSNAKEEEE,(snake) as I gasped for a breath! That Viper's presence skipped multiple beats in my heart, and I found myself lying on the floor, scared out of my wits. Along with me, I brought down some of the stationery and books lying on the table. This jarring sound brought my mother, father, and sister running into my room. Seeing their perplexed faces, I feared the snake might emerge from the box at any moment, so I gestured for them to stop and pointed my fingers down at the box. They looked down and were shocked. Without hesitation, my father promptly covered the box with its lid and placed weighing objects. I sighed with relief. There were small holes through which cockroaches could move, but not the snake. Cockroaches were still flying, and so was my sister, who used to scream at the top of her lungs whenever she encountered a cockroach, let alone a flying one! My mother, however, handled these cockroaches very efficiently. She could simply catch hold of one and throw it out! People were called, and they removed the Viper from my room. My mind flashed back... Those flutters and the flight of cockroaches were due to the Viper trying to catch them and enjoying its easy meal. Oh my God, I've been sleeping on the floor in this room with this Viper beside me in the box for the past week! A jittery feeling ran from my head to my toe. Uff, these cockroaches! CHAPTER 1 Sometimes, childhood is least concerned about the happenings around us, whereas the innocent mind is always busy calculating the divisions and additions of friendship. Could ignorance have a cost? Returning from school, I used to get off at the Nallalam Bazar bus stop in Kozhikode (Kerala) and walk nearly a kilometer to my house, which was an apartment on the ground floor of the Telecom Staff quarters. With my hands either in my pockets or holding the straps of my school bag (which rests over my shoulder), I used to walk towards my house. Occasionally, I would kick a stone or an empty can to make my way home while my mind replayed the events from earlier in the school. As I arrived home, I would glance at all the cans or stones lying beneath the veranda. Some of them would be missing. The workers who clean the area might have removed most of the cans. After getting refreshed, I used to take a little nap before my evening studies. I preferred to on the floor, leaving the cot aside. It cools me. We had a volleyball match that day at school, and I was engrossed in it. Just then, I felt something flying over me. Since my mind was flying along with the volleyball, I ignored it. But before I could close my eyes, I felt something flying around me again. Ouch, it was a cockroach. SWAT! That was the end of it, and I relocated it to its designated spot—the waste bin. RECAP I had to be on an official visit to Colombo during the early 1990s when Sri Lanka was in the grip of a civil war. On my first day in Colombo, two cops appeared outside my hotel room. They questioned me and searched my passport. One of the cops gave me a puzzled look and whispered to his colleague. Within seconds, he asked me, "Is this how you arrived from the airport?" My First Day in Colombo....CHAPTER 3 Within seconds, Cop 2 asked me, "Is this how you arrived at the airport?" I was perplexed and nervous, and before I could say anything, the two cops began to laugh. Cop 1 remarked, "Mr. Krishnan, you have put your Banian (vest) outside your T-shirt. Did you arrive from the airport in this manner? Cop 2 handed my passport over to me. It felt like a weight off my shoulders, and I couldn't stop laughing as I looked at myself wearing my white Banian over a dark blue T-shirt. The hotel staff, too, burst into laughter; perhaps they wanted to say, "Your comedy of errors has made the cops smile and eased the situation!" Looking at the cops, I clarified, "I just had a bath and was about to dress when you knocked. It all happened in a hurry." "Now, go back and dress properly before leaving the hotel," advised Cop 2. "Have a good evening and a pleasant stay in Colombo," Cop 1 wished before leaving. With a deep sense of relief, I glanced at a hotel staff member who had remained with me. Looking at those cops, he clarified my doubts: "They were Sinhalese Sri Lankan cops, who always conduct a routine check when new guests check in due to the ongoing civil war." Luckily, you were a Keralite, providing a respite from too many questions. If you were from Tamil Nadu, the situation would be different, and I assume the questioning would continue because of the ongoing LTTE (Tamil Rebel Group) civil war. RECAP It was the early 1990s, and it was my first day in Colombo. A civil war was at its peak during the 1990's, in Sri Lanka. I was on assignment for my Indian company. I had landed in Colombo during and had just checked into a hotel. Immediately after my bath, I heard a knock on my door. I was shocked to see two cops and two hotel staff members standing in the corridor outside my room! My First Day in Colombo… CHAPTER 2 "What's your name?" Cop 1 inquired. "Where are you from?" Cop 2 added. "My name is Krishnan, and I'm from India." I politely answered. "Please stand aside," Cop 2 instructed, and he began looking at my room, including the bathroom. Cop 1 began to speak in Tamil, which I couldn't grasp because of my poor understanding of Tamil. I replied in English, "Pardon me, I did not understand." "Why have you come to Colombo?" Cop 1 continued in English, as he was convinced I did not understand Tamil. "Show your passport," Cop 2 instructed. My heart sank when he requested my passport. I feared I would be in trouble if they held it for some reason. I showed them my passport and visa, which showed the name of our local agency as my sponsor, and all the documentation related to my assignment. I also gave them information about our company's products and briefed them about my assignment. "So you are from Kerala," said Cop 1, flipping through my passport with a smile. Cop 2 stared at me for around 30 seconds, giving me a puzzled look. He then looked at Cop 1 and whispered something to him, pointing at me. I began to feel butterflies in my stomach as my heartbeat raced. Both the hotel staff were also confused as they exchanged glances. They first looked at the cops, then at me.
