Orange juice crisis ’24 – Japan’s OJ supplies drying up Despite Japan’s well-deserved reputation a wonderland of delicious pleasures for the palate, the country isn’t immune to food/beverage crises. We’re only two years out from the potato shortage of 2022, when some fast food chains in Japan had to restrict French fry sales or replace their spuds with something else entirely, and who can forget the dark, dry days of Butter Crisis ’14 or Pizza Potato Crisis ’17? Now Japan looks to be facing another shortage of something ordinarily available just about anywhere: orange juice. In early April, Megmilk Snow Brand, the Japanese distributor for Dole juices, suspended sales of its Dole Orange 100% juice in 450-milliliter and one-liter cartons, leaving the less-than-half-pint 200-milliliter pack as the only remaining option. Then, on April 25, Morinaga Milk, Sunkist’s Japanese distributor, announced that it will be suspending sales of 200-milliliter cartons of Sunkist 100% Orange once its current ingredient supply runs out. ©SHIRSENDU KARMAKAR #Orange_Juce_Crises_24 #Japan

Japan startup reveals close-up image of space debris image Japanese space company Astroscale Holdings Inc has unveiled what it calls the world's first publicly released close-up image taken of space debris, hailing it as progress toward understanding the challenges posed by trash orbiting Earth. The debris -- the second-stage section of Japan's H2A rocket launched in 2009 -- was captured by the startup's cuboid-shaped demonstration satellite, known as ADRAS-J, from several hundred meters away. Orbiting at high speeds around 600 kilometers above Earth, the section is approximately 11 meters long with a diameter of some 4 meters and weighs roughly 3 tons. The image shows the object wrapped in brown insulation material as it drifts through the dark expanse of space. ©SHIRSENDU KARMAKAR #Japan

Japan strongly condemns Iranian attack on Israel Japan strongly condemned a retaliatory attack by Iran on Israel, calling it an escalation of events and saying it was deeply concerned at the situation, in a statement released by Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa on Sunday. "This attack is one that further worsens the current Middle East situation. We are deeply concerned and strongly condemn this sort of escalation," the statement said. Iran launched explosive drones and fired missiles at Israel late on Saturday in its first direct attack on Israeli territory, a retaliatory strike for an attack on its embassy in Syria that it blamed on Israel that raised the threat of a wider regional conflict. ©SHIRSENDU KARMAKAR #Japan

Japan's population falls below 125 mil; down for 13th straight year Japan's population fell by 595,000 from a year earlier to total 124,352,000 as of Oct 1, marking the 13th consecutive year of decline, with household size also continuing to shrink, national data showed Friday. The population of Japanese nationals fell by 837,000 to 121,193,000, marking the largest drop since comparable data became available in 1950, according to a demographic survey by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, despite government efforts to grapple with the country's declining birthrate and rapidly aging society. In an estimate released by a national population institute the same day, single-person households were forecast to account for 44.3 percent of the 52.61 million households in Japan in 2050, with nearly half of them made up of people aged 65 or older. ©SHIRSENDU KARMAKAR #Japan

Under the closer security ties, the five countries will increase joint drills in the Indo-Pacific region and promote cooperation on defensive technologies, the sources said. The new partnership is expected to be agreed upon at a meeting of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and U.S. President Joe Biden during an April 10 summit in Washington. It will be included in a joint statement to be issued after the summit. ©SHIRSENDU KARMAKAR #Japan #US #Boost_Security_Ties
