दर्द की दहलीज चाकू-छूड़ी से छोटी सी खरोंच लग जाए तो दर्द होता है, मानो उस जगह हरकत हुई तो बस प्राण उड़ जाए। जो ख़ून बहने लगे तो भी यही भान होता है, और तो और अगर पता हो कि हड्डी टूटी तो अगले क्षण का का मात्र चिंतन प्राणों पर भारी पर जाता है। हर किसी की दर्द सहने की क्षमता अलग-अलग होती है। उसी तरह उससे उबरने का साहस और आत्मबल हर व्यक्ति में कम और ज्यादा हो सकता है। दर्द से ज्यादा दुखदाई उसके भावी चरण और प्रकिया होती है। आजतक, किसी को जहर का स्वाद नहीं पता, विज्ञान के आधुनिक दौर में भी यह शोध का विषय है।
